A town in western Sicily, Poggioreale is mainly an agricultural community.
The history of Poggioreale is bound to a tragic event. The night between the 14th and 15th of January 1968, a violent earthquake struck a wide area of western Sicily: the Belice.
Three small towns were almost razed to the ground: Gibellina, Salaparuta and Poggioreale.
Although almost nothing remains in Salaparuta and Gibellina, Poggioreale still maintains its urban plan. Precisely for this reason it is called the ghost town. The building facades are intact, but inside they are completely gutted. Time seems to stand still and silence reigns among the debris and rust. To walk among these ruins, in the company of solitude, is a unique experience. It is a silent encounter with history; an intimate journey inside ourselves among the rubble and memories.
